Meet Hayleah Minor
Who is Hayleah?

I grew up and attended high school in Ritchie County, West Virginia. Originally, I had planned on attending Fairmont State University to pursue a career in secondary education. I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school until my favorite teacher insisted that I take her Educators Rising class and join their club. I questioned it at first, but after my first time tutoring elementary, middle, and high school students, I felt that becoming a teacher is what I was meant to do.
One week before my college move-in day, I woke up, brushed my hair and thought, “Nope, this isn’t gonna be it for me.” So, I researched different beauty schools in the area and thought maybe that would be a path better suited for me. I came across Preston’s Beauty Academy in Marietta, Ohio, and thought I’d send in an application. I really fought the idea of not going to the University but I knew if I got a quick response from Preston’s, I’d take that as a sign.
Within hours, I was contacted by the school and was asked to come in for a meeting. If that wasn’t a sign, I don’t know what it was. I shortly fell in love with the hair industry. However, starting out was a big shock to me. It was difficult to adjust to the atmosphere. I was coming from a place where no one really cared about how they looked and fashion was easily five years behind. At school, everyone was well dressed, not afraid to try new hair styles and very outgoing. So, I took that as an opportunity to learn and grow into someone who could not only have the skills to do the part, but to look it as well.
About three months into school, I was still waiting to find a set of specific skills that I felt completely confident in. I tried color, nails, make up, and anything else that comes to mind when you hear the term “cosmetology.” I was starting to think that I should’ve stuck with teaching, until my instructor, Tyler Preston, introduced me to cutting men’s hair. Once Tyler taught me how to use a set of clippers, I was all in for it. Men’s haircuts came easier to me than anything else.
Cutting men’s hair is great, especially when I get the opportunity to educate someone on their hair specifically. It is truly a blessing to be capable of giving someone a great haircut and a new look that can boost their confidence. Nothing feels better than watching your client check themselves out in the mirror after giving them a great cut!
